Whether you are a budding hobbyist or a seasoned maker, we will explore every method together, from beginner-friendly hacksaws to advanced laser cutting.

My favorite way to cut acrylic is to use a laser cutter. So, this is the first method we will go over. Tools needed for cutting acrylic

  • Table Saw:

a. A table saw with a fine-toothed blade can be used for straight cuts in acrylic sheets. The key is to feed the material steadily and use a fence for accurate cuts. b. Moderate difficulty. Requires some experience and caution.

  • Jigsaw:

a. A jigsaw equipped with a fine-toothed blade designed for plastics can make curved cuts and intricate shapes in acrylic. b. Moderate difficulty. It requires control and precision to achieve clean cuts.

  • Circular Saw:

a. Like a table saw, a circular saw can be used for straight cuts. It's important to use a fine-toothed blade and guide the saw carefully for accurate results. b. Moderate difficulty. Careful handling is needed for precision.

  • Utility Knife:

a. Explanation: A utility knife with a sharp blade can be used for scoring and snapping thinner acrylic sheets. It's suitable for straight cuts and simple shapes. b. Easy. Suitable for basic cuts but may not be ideal for intricate designs.

  • Router: a. Routers with acrylic-cutting bits can be used for shaping and trimming edges. They are versatile for creating decorative edges and designs. b. Moderate to difficult. Requires skill to control the router and achieve precise cuts.
  • Laser Cutting Machine: a. Laser cutting machines provide precise, clean cuts on acrylic. They are highly efficient for complex designs and can cut through various thicknesses. b. Easy to moderate. Once the machine is set up and calibrated, the actual cutting process is straightforward, but initial setup and safety considerations may require some expertise.

Methods

These are the methods in more detail.

  1. Laser Cutting

This computer-controlled process ensures accurate dimensions and flawless execution, catering to the specific needs of diverse businesses and industries. This is also one of the best ways to avoid getting hurt while working as you can set up the project then leave the area while it is being cut. It is always best to stay near the area just in case something goes wrong.

  2. Using a utility knife

This is one of the cheapest ways to cut acrylic. However, it can be more tedious than the other ways listed in this article. This method is best use when you need to cut straight acrylic. What I mean is that you should not try to use a utility knife for complex cuts. I would not even try using a utility knife for a simple circular cut.

Method for cutting acrylic with a utility knife

If you decide to use a utility knife for your next acrylic project, below are the steps needed.

a. Place the acrylic to be cut on a smooth but solid surface. Try to place it on a surface that will not scratch the acrylic.

b. Using a ruler or a straight edge, use the utility knife as if you were using a pencil to create a straight line or mark. While doing this, be sure to apply pressure. You will need to do this about 3 or 4 times depending on the sharpness of the knife or the amount of pressure you use.

c. For the last step you will be flipping the piece of acrylic on the opposite side and bending it along the straight line you just made with the utility knife.

3. Using a jigsaw

This is another method you can use to cut acrylic. This method is easier than using a utility knife. This method, however, is more dangerous than said utility method.

A jigsaw can be the go-to method if you need intricate designs like a star or polygon cut out.

  1. Using a Bandsaw

A bandsaw is another option that might interest you. However, this machine is large and usually only found in workshops.
