HOW TO USE A LASER ENGRAVER
HOW TO USE A LASER ENGRAVER: STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
Before we dive into how to use a laser engraver, we need to know what it is. A laser engraver uses a focused beam of light to vaporize or burn the surface of your chosen material. These materials can be wood, plastic, paper, and even metal.
How to use your laser engraver
It is very important to take all the necessary precautions when using a laser engraver. Below I will be going over all the tools necessary to start a laser engraving project and all the safety steps that you need to take.
Laser Essentials:
- Your mighty laser engraver: This is the star of the show, duh! Choose one that suits your project needs and budget.
- Computer and design software: Design your masterpiece on your computer and send it to the laser engraver using compatible software.
- Materials: Wood, leather, acrylic, and some metals are popular choices. Ensure they're compatible with your laser!
- Masking tape: Protect areas you don't want engraved.
Safety Gear:
- Laser safety glasses: Non-negotiable! Choose glasses with the correct Optical Density (OD) for your laser's wavelength. Think of them as sunglasses for your eyeballs, but way cooler.
- Fire extinguisher: Be prepared for any potential flames (especially with flammable materials).
- Fume extractor (optional): This sucks up dust and fumes created during engraving, keeping your air clean and your lungs happy.
- Gloves: Protect your hands from hot materials or stray laser beams (just in case).
- Dust mask: Protect your airways from dust and debris.
Bonus Tools:
- Safety enclosure: This surrounds the laser engraving area, adding an extra layer of protection.
- Air assist kit: Attaches to your compressed air and helps direct airflow towards the engraving area, improving precision and reducing charring.
- Honeycomb engraving bed: This holds your material securely and allows fumes to escape efficiently.
Is it easy to use a laser engraver?
A laser engraver is safe to use as long as certain precautions are followed. Some of these precautions are:
- Identify and avoid flammable materials,
- Wear laser safety glasses specifically designed for your laser's wavelength
- Use a fume extractor to remove harmful fumes and dust particles created during engraving
- Never leave the laser unattended while operating.
- Securely fasten your material to the engraving bed.
- Double-check your design and settings before starting. Mistakes can be permanent!
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines religiously.
- Be aware of the hazards of specific materials you're engraving.

Do I need a computer to use a laser engraver?
Most laser engravers need a computer in order to design the laser engraving and to set the different settings of the burn.
How does laser engraving work?
Laser engravers work by using a laser beam to burn away layers of materials. These can be materials such as: wood, paper, plastic, glass.
Is laser engraving hard to do?
Laser engraving is not hard to do. It all comes down to the type of laser engraver you have and the type pf material you plan on engraving. I engrave mainly canvas.
Canvas is easy to engrave. Especially the ones that are painted with multi-layer colors. Below is one of the canvases I did recently.
